I prefer to travel between SF and LA by car. It's not the quickest form of transportation but it is by far the most convenient and quite often the cheapest. Parking in San Francisco, save for certain areas, isn't as bad as most people make it out to be although there are areas where it's horrible. Driving in San Francisco is easier than LA because there isn't as many people and therefore less traffic. Public transportation, again, except for certain areas and times isn't as convenient as the popular myth suggests. If you intend to leave the city, public transportation becomes almost useless.

travel tips!! How to save you a lot of money, time and frustration on your net trip to San Francisco. The biggest problem you'll have with a car in San Francisco (besides all the one way streets and hills) is trying to find a parking spot- honestly, it's a NIGHTMARE! Jay Gross said it best. "If all the planets are properly aligned, if you're holding your mouth right and if you avoided walking under that ladder, you might, just might, be able to find a parking space in San Francisco". Parking in a public parking lot will run you a $20 to $25 a day. Parking at your hotel will run you $40 to $45 a day and most hotels don't own their parking lots. Plus the street meters are $.25 for 10 minutes and there is no overnight parking on city streets unless you are a permanent resident of San Francisco and have a parking permit sticker. But there is a great alternative! San Francisco has one the best public transportation systems in the United States! Really! There isn't any place in San Francisco that is more than just a few blocks away from one of the many modes of public transportation offered by the city. With that said, if you're going to spend seven days in San Francisco, that means you will spend over $400 on parking a rental car you won't use and don't need. I don't know about you but $400 is a lot of money to me to throw away on parking. With that money I could go to a fine dining restaurant, an off-Broadway theater show, take lots of taxis and still have money left over to enjoy.
