About Is it possible to travel from San Francisco to Madras, India without flying

Is it possible to travel from San Francisco to Madras, India without flying?
I know it is technically possible, I know it is possible if I owned my own yacht or freighter. But I am just an ordinary middle class guy with a lot of time and a few 10s of thousands to dollars. Can it be done as a series of sea and land based travels?

It's possible. Have you checked with your local travel agent? It seems like it would be time consuming though.

About Travel from San Francisco to Patterson CA

Travel from San Francisco to Patterson CA?
My hubby wants to visit his Aunt next week while we're in San Francisco. Is our only option to rent a car and drive to Patterson? Is Patterson near any of the wildfires going on at the moment? Is there any type of public transportation (train, bus etc). I believe it's approximately 80 miles one-way. Thank you for any info provided.

Your best bet is to rent a car. The whole valley is a bit smokey right now, but no real fire issues. If you wait till the weekend the wind will change and the air will be better. Have fun.

what is te cheapest way to travel from San Diego to San Francisco?
I am planning a trip with a friend to San Francisco and I want to set up a budget, I am flying from Mexico to San Diego to stay a couple days with a Friend and then head up to SF, do you know the best and cheapest way to do it? Thanks

definetly not flying! I would try greyhound or amtrak. I love the train, that is a fun, pleasant way to travel. They have a snack cart and tables and all kinds of ways to relax and not be crammed in some airline seat next to the old sweaty fat guy with no food service. lol...
2 :
By Train or a charter bus. The train is a little bit more expensive but it's better
3 :
Amtrak's regular fare is $69.00. Greyhound's regular fare is $60.35. The only cheaper way is hitchhiking.
4 :
if you can make your way to LA, there's a super cheap bus that runs up to SF: starting at $25. http://www.cashuttlebus.com/
5 :
The bus is cheap if you're only doing a one-way trip. It's about $130 round trip, which is about what you'd pay for a round trip airline ticket with a two-week advance purchase. Bus=8-10 hours Plane=1 hour You decide.

About what is the best time to travel to San Francisco

What is the best time to travel to San Francisco?
I have heard September is the best month but we have time available in April. Would it be worth it to make a trip to SF in April?

San Francisco Is always beautiful, you won't be wasting your money. Is always a little cold even in summer so just be prepared. You'll have a lot of fun
2 :
April is a very nice time to visit. There will still be a bit of chill in the air in the evening, but it's usually cloudless.
3 :
Spring or Fall. I prefer the Spring because things are still green from the rains. I usually visit in May. Summer can be quite cool in SF but the Fall is pleasant. September would be a good month to visit.
4 :
Late September and October are the warmest months, if that's important. But the cold months aren't particularly cold. It's at its greenest/most vibrant in late winter and spring... at its most brown and dehydrated circa late summer and fall. April is a great month to visit. It's just past the rainy season, so should be clear... and all the plants will be green and vibrant and whatnot. Reasonably warm (in the 60s for highs, low 50s for lows). September and October are warmer, but not much (the difference between cold and hot in San Francisco is a difference of about 15 to 20 degrees.
5 :
April is it!!! Sun, warm, the bay sparkles. October is also great.
6 :
yes, april is beautiful. past the rainy season.

About how do I travel from San Francisco to UC Davis by public transportation

How do I travel from San Francisco to UC Davis by public transportation?
Is there a Cal Train or bus that goes there?
San Francisco - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I live in Oakland, and there's an Amtrak Station where the Amtrak train goes all the way towards Sacramento and the UC Davis area.
2 :
As Ian said, you take the Amtrak Capitol Corridor train from Oakland. Dont know how to get to the tain station from S.F. Dont know if it stops at Davis. The Cal Train only goes from S.F. to Gilroy. Check with Amtrak. May be easier to get a ride-share from a UC student on Craigslist.
3 :
Take BART to Richmond, the transfer to Amtrak there. They share a station. The Capital Corridor train makes a stop in Davis.
4 :
For answers to this type of question you can use the trip planner located here: http://www.511.org It will get you door to door, all transfers, cost and travel time.
5 :
Take BART to Richmond, then transfer to Amtrak there. go to http://www.bart.gov/index.aspx for Schedules http://www.bart.gov/tickets/calculator/index.aspx for Bart and http://www.capitolcorridor.org/ for Amtrak (Capitol Corridor) get off at Davis Station.
6 :
Amtrak runs buses from SF to the Amtrak station in the East Bay. I know there is a stop in front of the Hyatt Regency (Market & Drumm) and there are other stops around SF. Look at the Amtrak website, probably will give you where the bus stops are and if they cost anything (I know they used to be free, don't know if they now charge for the trip), and what the stop schedule is. Or call Amtrak. Then catch the Amtrak train to Davis. Don't know how close it gets to the campus but it can't be all that far since students come and go all the time.

If you need guidebooks, maps, and assorted accessories (money belts, backpacks, etc.), Get Lost is independently owned and a great resource: Get Lost 1825 Market St (at Pearl St) (415) 437-0529 Municipal Metro (L, M and K/T): Church St. For heavy luggage, they are many possibilities. This is a partial listing of stores that are near Downtown transit stations: Edwards Luggage 3 Embarcadero Ctr (415) 981-7047 BART / Municipal Metro (L, M, N, J, and K/T): The Embarcadero Century Luggage 960 Market St (415) 776-5339 BART / Municipal Metro (L, M, N, J, and K/T): Montgomery Street Lugguge World 91 Jefferson St (415) 732-0277 Municipal Metro (F): Pier 39 Barry's Luggage 269 Jefferson St (415) 775-2339 Municipal Metro (F): Jefferson and Beach Hideo Wakamatsu of Tokyo 563 Valencia St (415) 255-3029 BART: 16th Street
3 :
Edwards Luggage in the Embarcadero has a reasonable selection of luggage and travel items, although the luggage is kind of expensive. Macy's has luggage, and is having a sale now. If you have time to do some shopping online, I highly recommend Magellan's for everything, and I mean everything, you might need for travel. You'll find things you didn't realize you needed until you see them. http://www.magellans.com/
4 :
For luggage, try Marshals or Ross. That where my luggage is from. There and Kohls but idk if they are in San Fran.

Fastest way to travel to San Francisco from Boston MA other than flying?
I want to visit a friend in San Francisco, and i live in Boston Massachussetts but im terrified of flying, what is the quickest way to get there that's not flying OTHER than flying, i dont care how anyone else feeks about it, im afraid of it

Flying silly! It's the "safest" way to travel. And LOL you're afraid of flying. Haha. I find that funny.
2 :
Greyhound is faster by 90 min. One route gets there in 3 days, 2 hrs, 30 min. AMTRAK will take 76 hours...3 days, 4 hrs. http://www.greyhound.com/home/ http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak
3 :
if you can bring someone alone, driving by car is the fastest way besides flying. just go non-stop or stop in a motel only when it's necessary. greyhound is the worst way to go. it makes too many stops in too many cities, and the route isn't always a straight route. i look a trip from st. louis to la, and it took 5 days. the guy sitting next to me started in new york, and it took him 2 days just to get to st. louis. same thing with amtrak. too many stops. i don't blame you for not choosing to fly. just being in the air for 6 hours with nothing to do is torture.

About How can I travel from San Jose to San Francisco early on a Sunday morning without driving

How can I travel from San Jose to San Francisco early on a Sunday morning without driving?
I need to get from San Jose to north SF by 9:30 AM on a Sunday, and won't be able to drive there. Unfortunately, the earliest Caltrain on Sunday doesn't get to the SF station until 9:36 AM, and it'll take over an additional half an hour for me to ride the bus from the station to my destination. Is there a quicker/less costly/more convenient way for me to get from San Jose to San Francisco on time than to ride a bus all the way? Thanks!
San Francisco - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Those who're stranded by Caltrain can always take the bus over to BART. The system is designed specifically for that. VTA Bus #180 to the Fremont BART station (arrives 8:07 AM) departs from the following locations: San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station 7:21a 1st & Santa Clara 7:26a Civic Center VTA Light Rail Station 7:33a Great Mall of the Bay Area Transit Center 7:43a From Fremont station, board a Richmond bound train (8:15 AM) to BayFair (8:33 AM). Transfer at BayFair (8:45 AM) to a Millbrae bound train. You'll arrive at the four Downtown San Francisco stations between 9:12 AM and 9:17 AM. The fare is $3.50 VTA + $5.25 BART = $8.75 one-way

About I want to travel to San Francisco, CA on Amtrak. Where should I stay and what can I do without renting a car

I want to travel to San Francisco, CA on Amtrak. Where should I stay and what can I do without renting a car?
I am considering taking the AMTRAK train to San Francisco for approximately three days. I want to know what station should I get off at and what hotels are nearby. I expect this to be a walking trip so I was thinking of getting off at the Fisherman's wharf. What hotels are nearby? Please help! Hi all, thanks for the responses. I found out that the train will let me off at these places: Ferry Bldg Financial Center Fisherman's Wharf Moscone Center Peninsula Line Union Square Does this change anything? I've been to Fisherman's wharf about 8 years ago. At the time, I stayed in San Mateo and took a bus to that area. I just hopped on a bus and went back to the hotel later that day.

I think there's only one AMTRAK station, and it's not in the best area in the city. Public transportation is great, so you don't need a car if you want to stay in the city, but there's so much to see outside SF that a car for a day or 2 would be a real advantage. Post your question on any of the following forums and you'll get all the suggestions you need. http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/ http://www.fodors.com/forums http://www.frommers.com
2 :
Depending on which train you're taking, you either have to get off in Emeryville or Jack London Square (Oakland). You'll be fine, despite most tourists' irrational fear upon hearing the word "Oakland", the Amtrak stations are actually not in a "ghetto" area. Besides, Amtrak shuttle buses will be available to whisk you Downtown in no time (15 minute ride). Once there, you can take the ferry, bus, tram, or metro basically anywhere You certainly don't need a car in San Francisco. In fact, it's best to not have to deal with the city's notorious lack of parking, rude drivers/pedestrians, and ticket-loving cops. You can practically do it all with your feet and public transit...the Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Berkeley Univ., Marin County, the Museums, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Mission Delores, the Zoo, Ocean Beach...not a problem. The only place where you would need a car is Wine Country or the National Parks (and if you're so inclined, you could always join one of the daily tour groups that leaves from the Wharf). There's practically every kind of hotel imaginable Downtown, from the 5-star "Roman Temple" inspired Ritz... to the budget converted gym YMCA hostels. The only limit is how much you're willing to spend. The chain gang are all there as well (Marriott, Hilton, Renaissance, Holiday Inn, Hyatt), if you're looking for the reliable and familiar. Most have easy access to at least one kind of transit, usually more. Additional Details: Yeah, the destinations you got are actually the bus stops for the shuttle from Oakland.
3 :
You do not need a car in SF. Better off w/out it. Rapid trans in the city is exceptionally good and ontime. very hard to find parking in SF
4 :
amtrak is probably going to make you take a bus from oakland, as the train doesn't actually go into the city. when you get off the bus, you are close to the embarcadero and the ferry building. they ferry building is great on the weekends, they have a huge farmers market and lots of little shops/restaurants there! also, if you stay in the embarcadero area, then you can easily walk downtown (union square...shopping!!!) or take the public transportation system anywhere...they actually have a good transporation system. it can take you anywhere and everywhere you want to go!
5 :
Amtrak's options will have you get off the train at Emeryville or Oakland. From there, you will take an Amtrak bus to your destination in San Francisco. I recommend either the Ferry Building or the Fisherman's Wharf because they are fairly central locations that are easy to find. Unless you are disabled to the point of limited walking ability (which may very well be), it is not necessary to rent a car. San Francisco has public transportation systems coming out the ears, and many bus routes run for 24 hours. I am sure that you could find a way to where you want to go at any time of day or night as long as you don't mind doing a little walking. In fact, it is more ideal to use public transportation in San Francisco because driving in that city is a nightmare. Check out www.transitinfo.org. There's lots of information on there regarding San Francisco's PT. As for hotels, I really don't know very much (I should probably learn more). I usually stay at the Radisson Miyako in Japantown (being the Japanophile that I am). But I'm almost certain that you will be able to find a decent hotel in SF.
6 :
The Amtrak questions have been answered, as far as hotels: Argonaut, on the wharf.

About can someone travel from San Francisco to Alaska by greyhound bus or train

can someone travel from San Francisco to Alaska by greyhound bus or train?
if not, what is the cheapest way to travel there?
Other - United States - 6 Answers

1 :
Yep you deifnately can by bus, not positive if you can by train or not
2 :
Greyhound has no stops in Alaska. (just searched) Currently prices start at $617 for a plane ticket on Alaska Airlines from SFO to Anchorage
3 :
Bus, yes, just not Greyhound. Alaska Direct Bus Line offers bus services between Anchorage and Whitehorse, Canada (travel time - 16 to 18 hours) and between Fairbanks and Whitehorse (journey time - 13 to 15 hours). From Whitehorse, Greyhound Canada offers connections to Vancouver, British Columbia (journey time - 40 hours 30 minutes). The total travel time from Alaska to the lower 48 States can take up to five days and involve a number of connections.
4 :
Check the price of taking Greyhound to Seattle, and then taking a ferry (boat) from Seattle to Alaska.
5 :
There is not any train service between Canada and Alaska. Fly, boat, or drive.
6 :
Tonalc is correct, Greyhound bus, San Francisco to Seattle $90, Seattle to Vancouver $28, Vancouver to Whitehorse $270, Then Alaska direct busline Whitehouse to Anchorage $230. It take 5 to 6 days to arrive there, it will extremly exhausted. Whitehouse to anchorage line only operates Wed and Sun. So the better and fast way is fly, I got there from SF to ANC for $422 round trip last week. I enjoy AK, glacier and wild animals. It is not that cold now, but many tourist sites is still close. Alaska is pretty expensive. The hotel I stayed was $69 now, will be $129 next month, and $199 June to Aug.

About What is the economical way to travel between San Francisco and Detroit frequently

What is the economical way to travel between San Francisco and Detroit frequently?
Hi, I want to travel to Detroit from SFO frequently, could you please help me with the economical way for this. I dont mind going in train, bus, flight etc also any near by airports is also fine. And I travel almost once in 15 days, your help is much appreciated. Regards, S
San Francisco - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
greyhound is probably the cheapest way to go. but if you're flying, oakland airport is generally cheaper to fly in and out of.
2 :
How much time can you afford to spend traveling? Amtrak will take several days, and I assume the bus will also take several days. Either way, you are going to be sinking a lot of your time into traveling, and even if it is cheaper than flying (Amtrak is usually the same or even more expensive), not being able to work for several days may not be worth any savings you are getting. I would suggest getting familiar with hunting for bargain air fare. There are websites where you can get great deals on last minute flights, but you will have to be flexible about layovers. Also, look at Oakland and San Jose airports too, to expand your options. If the uncertainty of a last minute flight isn't for you, you may want to opt for a frequent-flyer program, if these still exist. As a frequent flyer, you will be booking flights on one airline and earning points with them that you can use in the future for free flights.
3 :
The train is the most expensive way to travel. The bus can really add up in cost. The airfare route, with a frequent flyer number and a credit card that awards you double frequent flyer awards is best. Southwest Air just announced an entire slew of flights at much lower costs. A number of airlines have run to match. Your best bet is to sign up with a site like Orbitz or Expedia, and research their lowest fare. Then, go to Southwest Airlines site and see what their pricing is. On SWA, if you book 30 days in advance, you can usually get a flight for as low as $39 one way. SWA does have flights in and out of SFO, but the hub is Oakland. Most folks in SF prefer Oakland as it is way more convenient. There are shuttles between the airports as well. Happy Trails!
