There are two Travel Lodges. If you're in the one on 110 S. El Camino Real, you're right next to BART. If you're in the one on South Airport Blvd., there is a free shuttle to the airport, and you could catch BART there.

the airport is far from downtown sf, but you can always take the BART train in. find out where the nearest bart station is, and if the hotel offers a shuttle service to it.

The easiest way is on Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). There should be a station nearby the airport. Simply take any line heading into the East Bay and get off at Civic Center Station (City Hall, Orpheum Theatre), Powell Station (Westfield Shopping Center, Union Square), Montgomery Station (Financial District), or Embarcadero Station (Ferry Building, Embarcadero Center). Those the the four major SF BART stops. You could find more info about schedules and routes on their website (www.bart.gov) and you could find a easy to navigate trip planner on the San Francisco Municipal Transportation website (www.sfmta.org). That way you don't need to wait for answers and you could plan out your entire trip by public transit! Another thing is if you're not planning to rent a car and planning to spend more than one day in SF I would highly recommend getting a visitor passport for public transportation. I prefer to travel between SF and LA by car. It's not the quickest form of transportation but it is by far the most convenient and quite often the cheapest. Parking in San Francisco, save for certain areas, isn't as bad as most people make it out to be although there are areas where it's horrible. Driving in San Francisco is easier than LA because there isn't as many people and therefore less traffic. Public transportation, again, except for certain areas and times isn't as convenient as the popular myth suggests. If you intend to leave the city, public transportation becomes almost useless.

The biggest problem you'll have with a car in San Francisco (besides all the one way streets and hills) is trying to find a parking spot- honestly, it's a NIGHTMARE! Jay Gross said it best. With that money I could go to a fine dining restaurant, an off-Broadway theater show, take lots of taxis and still have money left over to enjoy.

If your flying yes its SUPER easy. They have lots of flights leaving SFO - JFK. Non stop. (But its a tad expensive) If your driving or taking greyhound. It will be a LONG ride.

Flying is indeed super easy since there are a good amount of airlines that fly non-stop to the 3 airports that serve NYC. Other methods just take more time and it is probably not as easy to find that many options due to the time consumption.

I like San Francisco better because there are many fun places to visit like Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, and Union Square. Visiting Alcatraz is interesting and riding a cable car is fun. The hilly streets are amazing and the city is beautiful. There is a variety of good restaurants too. The city is loaded with history and fun things to do.

Not directly. You can travel by train, but you will have to drive or take a bus to the next train area. It would take a great deal of time for you to accomplish this, as the train is not the best mode of transportation to South America.

I am pretty sure that there is no trains that travel even as far as Guatemala. Some of the other central american countries each have some railroad networks but they are not connected. In any case, they are not widely used for transprotation even in Mexico, busses are faster and more widely used. The railroad networks in central america are largely from the banana growing regions to the ports and are not for passengers. As for bus or car transport the road has a gap between Panama and Columbia about 200 miles south of the canal in a dense swamp/jungle.

No. In between Panama and Colombia there's a huge stretch of jungle that blocks traffic. You'd have to take a boat from Panama to Cartagena. and then continue the journey south.

Transit: Walk to Market Street (2 blocks up Fremont Street) and take the subway. 35 Minutes. Costs $5.15. Taxi: 25-30 Minutes. Costs approx. $40.00 + tip. Given the cost differences, I'd take public transit and save all that money.

PS the public transit system referred to in the first post is called BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and you'll know you're above a station when see signs that say "ba" on Market Street. You will have to buy a magnetic striped ticket from the machines which you use to enter and exit the system. Once you get down to the platform you want a train that says San Francisco Airport or Millbrae. The other trains don't go there. Trains only come every 20 minutes on Saturday. Hope this all helps.

San Francisco Is always beautiful, you won't be wasting your money. Is always a little cold even in summer so just be prepared. You'll have a lot of fun

April is a very nice time to visit. There will still be a bit of chill in the air in the evening, but it's usually cloudless.

Spring or Fall. I prefer the Spring because things are still green from the rains. I usually visit in May. Summer can be quite cool in SF but the Fall is pleasant. September would be a good month to visit.

Late September and October are the warmest months, if that's important. But the cold months aren't particularly cold. It's at its greenest/most vibrant in late winter and spring... at its most brown and dehydrated circa late summer and fall. April is a great month to visit. It's just past the rainy season, so should be clear... and all the plants will be green and vibrant and whatnot. Reasonably warm (in the 60s for highs, low 50s for lows). September and October are warmer, but not much (the difference between cold and hot in San Francisco is a difference of about 15 to 20 degrees.

I live in Oakland, and there's an Amtrak Station where the Amtrak train goes all the way towards Sacramento and the UC Davis area.

As Ian said, you take the Amtrak Capitol Corridor train from Oakland. Dont know how to get to the tain station from S.F. Dont know if it stops at Davis. The Cal Train only goes from S.F. to Gilroy. Check with Amtrak. May be easier to get a ride-share from a UC student on Craigslist.

Take BART to Richmond, the transfer to Amtrak there. They share a station. The Capital Corridor train makes a stop in Davis.

Or call Amtrak. Then catch the Amtrak train to Davis. Don't know how close it gets to the campus but it can't be all that far since students come and go all the time.

if you can bring someone alone, driving by car is the fastest way besides flying. just go non-stop or stop in a motel only when it's necessary. greyhound is the worst way to go. it makes too many stops in too many cities, and the route isn't always a straight route. i look a trip from st. louis to la, and it took 5 days. the guy sitting next to me started in new york, and it took him 2 days just to get to st. louis. same thing with amtrak. too many stops. i don't blame you for not choosing to fly. just being in the air for 6 hours with nothing to do is torture.

Those who're stranded by Caltrain can always take the bus over to BART. The system is designed specifically for that. VTA Bus #180 to the Fremont BART station (arrives 8:07 AM) departs from the following locations: San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station 7:21a 1st & Santa Clara 7:26a Civic Center VTA Light Rail Station 7:33a Great Mall of the Bay Area Transit Center 7:43a From Fremont station, board a Richmond bound train (8:15 AM) to BayFair (8:33 AM). I think there's only one AMTRAK station, and it's not in the best area in the city. Public transportation is great, so you don't need a car if you want to stay in the city, but there's so much to see outside SF that a car for a day or 2 would be a real advantage. Depending on which train you're taking, you either have to get off in Emeryville or Jack London Square (Oakland). You'll be fine, despite most tourists' irrational fear upon hearing the word "Oakland", the Amtrak stations are actually not in a "ghetto" area. Besides, Amtrak shuttle buses will be available to whisk you Downtown in no time (15 minute ride). Once there, you can take the ferry, bus, tram, or metro basically anywhere You certainly don't need a car in San Francisco. In fact, it's best to not have to deal with the city's notorious lack of parking, rude drivers/pedestrians, and ticket-loving cops. You can practically do it all with your feet and public transit...the Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Berkeley Univ., Marin County, the Museums, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Mission Delores, the Zoo, Ocean Beach...not a problem. The only place where you would need a car is Wine Country or the National Parks (and if you're so inclined, you could always join one of the daily tour groups that leaves from the Wharf). There's practically every kind of hotel imaginable Downtown, from the 5-star "Roman Temple" inspired Ritz... to the budget converted gym YMCA hostels. The only limit is how much you're willing to spend. The chain gang are all there as well (Marriott, Hilton, Renaissance, Holiday Inn, Hyatt), if you're looking for the reliable and familiar. Most have easy access to at least one kind of transit, usually more. Additional Details: Yeah, the destinations you got are actually the bus stops for the shuttle from Oakland.

You do not need a car in SF. Better off w/out it. Rapid trans in the city is exceptionally good and ontime. very hard to find parking in SF

amtrak is probably going to make you take a bus from oakland, as the train doesn't actually go into the city. when you get off the bus, you are close to the embarcadero and the ferry building. they ferry building is great on the weekends, they have a huge farmers market and lots of little shops/restaurants there! also, if you stay in the embarcadero area, then you can easily walk downtown (union square...shopping!!!) or take the public transportation system anywhere...they actually have a good transporation system. it can take you anywhere and everywhere you want to go!

Amtrak's options will have you get off the train at Emeryville or Oakland. From there, you will take an Amtrak bus to your destination in San Francisco. I recommend either the Ferry Building or the Fisherman's Wharf because they are fairly central locations that are easy to find. Unless you are disabled to the point of limited walking ability (which may very well be), it is not necessary to rent a car. San Francisco has public transportation systems coming out the ears, and many bus routes run for 24 hours. I am sure that you could find a way to where you want to go at any time of day or night as long as you don't mind doing a little walking. In fact, it is more ideal to use public transportation in San Francisco because driving in that city is a nightmare. Check out www.transitinfo.org. There's lots of information on there regarding San Francisco's PT. As for hotels, I really don't know very much (I should probably learn more). I usually stay at the Radisson Miyako in Japantown (being the Japanophile that I am). But I'm almost certain that you will be able to find a decent hotel in SF.

Cheap ways to travel from san francisco to los angeles?
trying to get there on a limited budget. So far mega bus is the cheapest way. Does anyone have any suggestions? On another note i'm trying to travel around the united states cheap. Any suggestions? Other - United States - 4 Answers

Amtrak rail from SF to Bakersfield, then Amtrak bus to Grand Central Station then train again to nearby stops in LA.

I think you've got it. I don't think it gets much cheaper than Megabus. Book well in advance and you can score one of those $1 seats :)

Hi, I want to travel to Detroit from SFO frequently, could you please help me with the economical way for this. I dont mind going in train, bus, flight etc also any near by airports is also fine. greyhound is probably the cheapest way to go. but if you're flying, oakland airport is generally cheaper to fly in and out of.

How much time can you afford to spend traveling? Amtrak will take several days, and I assume the bus will also take several days. Either way, you are going to be sinking a lot of your time into traveling, and even if it is cheaper than flying (Amtrak is usually the same or even more expensive), not being able to work for several days may not be worth any savings you are getting. I would suggest getting familiar with hunting for bargain air fare. There are websites where you can get great deals on last minute flights, but you will have to be flexible about layovers. Also, look at Oakland and San Jose airports too, to expand your options. If the uncertainty of a last minute flight isn't for you, you may want to opt for a frequent-flyer program, if these still exist. As a frequent flyer, you will be booking flights on one airline and earning points with them that you can use in the future for free flights.

The train is the most expensive way to travel. The bus can really add up in cost. The airfare route, with a frequent flyer number and a credit card that awards you double frequent flyer awards is best. Southwest Air just announced an entire slew of flights at much lower costs. A number of airlines have run to match. Your best bet is to sign up with a site like Orbitz or Expedia, and research their lowest fare. Then, go to Southwest Airlines site and see what their pricing is. On SWA, if you book 30 days in advance, you can usually get a flight for as low as $39 one way. SWA does have flights in and out of SFO, but the hub is Oakland. Most folks in SF prefer Oakland as it is way more convenient. There are shuttles between the airports as well. Happy Trails!

Here it is, Mapquest.com will tell you that. Type mapquest.com in any search block. It will give you all the info. Then select point to point driving direction, then finish the ask for info and will give you driving time and exact road to take, road condition and the distances. You will have choice of direct (fastest road or scenic road). ******************** You will need international driving permit or license and credit card and you have to be 25 years or older to rent a car here in USA, but there are few companies that will rent you a car at a very high age surcharge,if you are younger. ************* If you are not and experience driver then do not venture out in a car, take any public transportation (preferred) or even a cab(very expensive).

THE BEST way to get to San Jose from SFO: you could purchase a pre-owned but low mileage BMW M3 (so that the engine is already broken in) right after you land, especially if you bring enough cash with you for the purchase. I'm sure a Bimmer dealership would be willing to pick you up at the airport if you're doing this. Then take your new M3 up highway 92 and head south on Hwy 35 along the ridgetop (note this is not the most direct route, but it's a great drive in a BMW). Then take Hwy 9 down to Santa Cruz, where you can pick up Hwy 17 and head to San Jose.

do you need a passport to travel from san francisco to san diego?
I recently renewed my passport and its in the process of renewing and i havent gotten it back yet. i was wondering if i will need it to go to san diego next week from san francisco without it because im afraid they wont mail me the passport back in time. Both San Franscisco and San Diego are in the US. As long as you don't plan on crossing the border into Mexico when you are in San Diego, you won't need a passport. No US citizen needs a passport to go from a US city to another US city.

You will only need a passport if you plan on taking the loooooooooooooong way to San Diego, like through Canada or Mexico.... :)

San Fran to SD isnt even crossing state borders. You only need a passport to cross international borders. When flying to different cities in the same state or country...a passport isnt necissary.

Not unless you plan to visit both cities by detouring through a foreign country. Your government issued picture ID (drivers license for example) is just fine for getting onto any public transportation system (plane, train, car rental, bus, etc).
