Is it possible to travel from San Francisco to Madras, India without flying?
I know it is technically possible, I know it is possible if I owned my own yacht or freighter. But I am just an ordinary middle class guy with a lot of time and a few 10s of thousands to dollars. Can it be done as a series of sea and land based travels? Other - Destinations - 2 Answers

About Travel from San Francisco to Patterson CA

Travel from San Francisco to Patterson CA?
My hubby wants to visit his Aunt next week while we're in San Francisco. Is our only option to rent a car and drive to Patterson? Is Patterson near any of the wildfires going on at the moment? Is there any type of public transportation (train, bus etc). I believe it's approximately 80 miles one-way. Thank you for any info provided. San Francisco - 3 Answers

Your best bet is to rent a car. The whole valley is a bit smokey right now, but no real fire issues. If you wait till the weekend the wind will change and the air will be better. Have fun.

I am planning a trip with a friend to San Francisco and I want to set up a budget, I am flying from Mexico to San Diego to stay a couple days with a Friend and then head up to SF, do you know the best and cheapest way to do it? Thanks San Francisco - 5 Answers

definetly not flying! I would try greyhound or amtrak. I love the train, that is a fun, pleasant way to travel. They have a snack cart and tables and all kinds of ways to relax and not be crammed in some airline seat next to the old sweaty fat guy with no food service. lol...

By Train or a charter bus. The train is a little bit more expensive but it's better

Amtrak's regular fare is $69.00. Greyhound's regular fare is $60.35. The only cheaper way is hitchhiking.

The bus is cheap if you're only doing a one-way trip. It's about $130 round trip, which is about what you'd pay for a round trip airline ticket with a two-week advance purchase. Bus=8-10 hours Plane=1 hour You decide.

What is the best time to travel to San Francisco?

San Francisco Is always beautiful, you won't be wasting your money. Is always a little cold even in summer so just be prepared. You'll have a lot of fun

April is a very nice time to visit. There will still be a bit of chill in the air in the evening, but it's usually cloudless.

Spring or Fall. I prefer the Spring because things are still green from the rains. I usually visit in May. Summer can be quite cool in SF but the Fall is pleasant. September would be a good month to visit.

Late September and October are the warmest months, if that's important. But the cold months aren't particularly cold. It's at its greenest/most vibrant in late winter and spring... at its most brown and dehydrated circa late summer and fall. April is a great month to visit. It's just past the rainy season, so should be clear... and all the plants will be green and vibrant and whatnot. Reasonably warm (in the 60s for highs, low 50s for lows). September and October are warmer, but not much (the difference between cold and hot in San Francisco is a difference of about 15 to 20 degrees.

I live in Oakland, and there's an Amtrak Station where the Amtrak train goes all the way towards Sacramento and the UC Davis area.

As Ian said, you take the Amtrak Capitol Corridor train from Oakland. Dont know how to get to the tain station from S.F. Dont know if it stops at Davis. The Cal Train only goes from S.F. to Gilroy. Check with Amtrak. May be easier to get a ride-share from a UC student on Craigslist.

Take BART to Richmond, the transfer to Amtrak there. They share a station. The Capital Corridor train makes a stop in Davis.

Amtrak runs buses from SF to the Amtrak station in the East Bay. I know there is a stop in front of the Hyatt Regency (Market & Drumm) and there are other stops around SF. Look at the Amtrak website, probably will give you where the bus stops are and if they cost anything (I know they used to be free, don't know if they now charge for the trip), and what the stop schedule is. Or call Amtrak. Then catch the Amtrak train to Davis. Don't know how close it gets to the campus but it can't be all that far since students come and go all the time.
