I want to visit a friend in San Francisco, and i live in Boston Massachussetts but im terrified of flying, what is the quickest way to get there that's not flying OTHER than flying, i dont care how anyone else feeks about it, im afraid of it Boston - 3 Answers

Flying silly! It's the "safest" way to travel. And LOL you're afraid of flying. Haha. I find that funny.

Greyhound is faster by 90 min. One route gets there in 3 days, 2 hrs, 30 min. AMTRAK will take 76 hours...3 days, 4 hrs. http://www.greyhound.com/home/ http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak

if you can bring someone alone, driving by car is the fastest way besides flying. just go non-stop or stop in a motel only when it's necessary. greyhound is the worst way to go. it makes too many stops in too many cities, and the route isn't always a straight route. i look a trip from st. louis to la, and it took 5 days. the guy sitting next to me started in new york, and it took him 2 days just to get to st. louis. same thing with amtrak. too many stops. i don't blame you for not choosing to fly. just being in the air for 6 hours with nothing to do is torture.

How can I travel from San Jose to San Francisco early on a Sunday morning without driving?
I need to get from San Jose to north SF by 9:30 AM on a Sunday, and won't be able to drive there. Unfortunately, the earliest Caltrain on Sunday doesn't get to the SF station until 9:36 AM, and it'll take over an additional half an hour for me to ride the bus from the station to my destination. Is there a quicker/less costly/more convenient way for me to get from San Jose to San Francisco on time than to ride a bus all the way? Thanks! San Francisco - 1 Answers

Those who're stranded by Caltrain can always take the bus over to BART. The system is designed specifically for that. VTA Bus #180 to the Fremont BART station (arrives 8:07 AM) departs from the following locations: San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station 7:21a 1st & Santa Clara 7:26a Civic Center VTA Light Rail Station 7:33a Great Mall of the Bay Area Transit Center 7:43a From Fremont station, board a Richmond bound train (8:15 AM) to BayFair (8:33 AM). Transfer at BayFair (8:45 AM) to a Millbrae bound train. You'll arrive at the four Downtown San Francisco stations between 9:12 AM and 9:17 AM. The fare is $3.50 VTA + $5.25 BART = $8.75 one-way

I want to travel to San Francisco, CA on Amtrak. Where should I stay and what can I do without renting a car?
I am considering taking the AMTRAK train to San Francisco for approximately three days. I want to know what station should I get off at and what hotels are nearby. I expect this to be a walking trip so I was thinking of getting off at the Fisherman's wharf. What hotels are nearby? Please help! Hi all, thanks for the responses. I found out that the train will let me off at these places: Ferry Bldg Financial Center Fisherman's Wharf Moscone Center Peninsula Line Union Square Does this change anything? I've been to Fisherman's wharf about 8 years ago. At the time, I stayed in San Mateo and took a bus to that area. I just hopped on a bus and went back to the hotel later that day. I think there's only one AMTRAK station, and it's not in the best area in the city. Public transportation is great, so you don't need a car if you want to stay in the city, but there's so much to see outside SF that a car for a day or 2 would be a real advantage. Depending on which train you're taking, you either have to get off in Emeryville or Jack London Square (Oakland). You'll be fine, despite most tourists' irrational fear upon hearing the word "Oakland", the Amtrak stations are actually not in a "ghetto" area. Besides, Amtrak shuttle buses will be available to whisk you Downtown in no time (15 minute ride). Once there, you can take the ferry, bus, tram, or metro basically anywhere You certainly don't need a car in San Francisco. In fact, it's best to not have to deal with the city's notorious lack of parking, rude drivers/pedestrians, and ticket-loving cops. You can practically do it all with your feet and public transit...the Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Berkeley Univ., Marin County, the Museums, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Mission Delores, the Zoo, Ocean Beach...not a problem. The only place where you would need a car is Wine Country or the National Parks (and if you're so inclined, you could always join one of the daily tour groups that leaves from the Wharf). There's practically every kind of hotel imaginable Downtown, from the 5-star "Roman Temple" inspired Ritz... to the budget converted gym YMCA hostels. The only limit is how much you're willing to spend. The chain gang are all there as well (Marriott, Hilton, Renaissance, Holiday Inn, Hyatt), if you're looking for the reliable and familiar. Most have easy access to at least one kind of transit, usually more. Additional Details: Yeah, the destinations you got are actually the bus stops for the shuttle from Oakland.

You do not need a car in SF. Better off w/out it. Rapid trans in the city is exceptionally good and ontime. very hard to find parking in SF

amtrak is probably going to make you take a bus from oakland, as the train doesn't actually go into the city. when you get off the bus, you are close to the embarcadero and the ferry building. they ferry building is great on the weekends, they have a huge farmers market and lots of little shops/restaurants there! also, if you stay in the embarcadero area, then you can easily walk downtown (union square...shopping!!!) or take the public transportation system anywhere...they actually have a good transporation system. it can take you anywhere and everywhere you want to go!

Amtrak's options will have you get off the train at Emeryville or Oakland. From there, you will take an Amtrak bus to your destination in San Francisco. I recommend either the Ferry Building or the Fisherman's Wharf because they are fairly central locations that are easy to find. Unless you are disabled to the point of limited walking ability (which may very well be), it is not necessary to rent a car. San Francisco has public transportation systems coming out the ears, and many bus routes run for 24 hours. I am sure that you could find a way to where you want to go at any time of day or night as long as you don't mind doing a little walking. In fact, it is more ideal to use public transportation in San Francisco because driving in that city is a nightmare. Check out www.transitinfo.org. There's lots of information on there regarding San Francisco's PT. As for hotels, I really don't know very much (I should probably learn more). I usually stay at the Radisson Miyako in Japantown (being the Japanophile that I am). But I'm almost certain that you will be able to find a decent hotel in SF.

Greyhound has no stops in Alaska. (just searched) Currently prices start at $617 for a plane ticket on Alaska Airlines from SFO to Anchorage

Bus, yes, just not Greyhound. Alaska Direct Bus Line offers bus services between Anchorage and Whitehorse, Canada (travel time - 16 to 18 hours) and between Fairbanks and Whitehorse (journey time - 13 to 15 hours). From Whitehorse, Greyhound Canada offers connections to Vancouver, British Columbia (journey time - 40 hours 30 minutes). The total travel time from Alaska to the lower 48 States can take up to five days and involve a number of connections.

Check the price of taking Greyhound to Seattle, and then taking a ferry (boat) from Seattle to Alaska.

There is not any train service between Canada and Alaska. Fly, boat, or drive.

Tonalc is correct, Greyhound bus, San Francisco to Seattle $90, Seattle to Vancouver $28, Vancouver to Whitehorse $270, Then Alaska direct busline Whitehouse to Anchorage $230. It take 5 to 6 days to arrive there, it will extremly exhausted. Whitehouse to anchorage line only operates Wed and Sun. So the better and fast way is fly, I got there from SF to ANC for $422 round trip last week. I enjoy AK, glacier and wild animals.It is not that cold now, but many tourist sites is still close. Alaska is pretty expensive.The hotel I stayed was $69 now, will be $129 next month, and $199 June to Aug.

Amtrak rail from SF to Bakersfield, then Amtrak bus to Grand Central Station then train again to nearby stops in LA.

I think you've got it. I don't think it gets much cheaper than Megabus. Book well in advance and you can score one of those $1 seats :)
